Is Google Ads Worth It for Sunshine Coast Tradies?

If you run a trade business on the Sunshine Coast, you've probably wondered whether Google Ads is worth the money. Maybe you've tried it, spent a few hundred dollars, and got plenty of clicks but very few real jobs. Or maybe you've held off because it feels like a gamble.

The short answer: Google Ads can be one of the most reliable ways for tradies to win new work, but only when it's set up for leads, not just traffic. Here's how it works, where most trade businesses go wrong, and what a well-run campaign can actually deliver.

Why Google Ads suits trade businesses

Most people don't scroll social media looking for a plumber, electrician or builder. They search for one, usually when they need the job done soon. Someone typing "emergency plumber Maroochydore" or "electrician near me Caloundra" already knows what they want. Your job is simply to be the business they find.

That's what makes Google Ads such a strong fit for trades:

  • High intent: you're reaching people who are actively looking for your service.

  • Local targeting: you can show ads only in the suburbs and service areas you actually cover, from Noosa down to Caloundra.

  • Control: you set the budget, choose the services you want more of, and can pause or adjust at any time.

  • Measurable: with proper tracking, you can see exactly which ads and keywords bring in calls and enquiries.

Where most tradies waste their Google Ads budget

When Google Ads doesn't work for a trade business, it's rarely because the platform doesn't work. It's usually the setup. These are the most common issues I see:

  1. Broad, generic ads. One ad trying to cover every service and every suburb won't stand out against competitors who speak directly to the searcher.

  2. Paying for the wrong searches. Without careful keyword choices and regular checks, budget leaks out on searches like DIY tips, job vacancies or areas you don't service.

  3. Sending clicks to the homepage. A visitor looking for a hot water repair shouldn't land on a general homepage and have to hunt for what they need.

  4. No conversion tracking. If calls and form enquiries aren't tracked, you can't tell what's working, and neither can Google's bidding.

  5. Set and forget. Campaigns need ongoing attention, especially when demand rises and falls with the seasons.

What a lead-focused campaign looks like

A campaign built for lead generation starts with the jobs you actually want and works backwards. That usually means:

  • Location-specific ad copy that speaks to the suburbs and service areas you cover.

  • Dedicated landing pages for your key services, built to turn a visitor into a call or enquiry.

  • Conversion tracking for phone calls and form submissions, so every lead is measured.

  • Gradual budget increases once the campaign proves there's demand and performance is strong.

  • Monthly optimisation of keywords, bids and ads, with clear reporting on what's working.

Case study: 4.5x more leads for a local trade business

A medium-sized local trade business came to me needing more efficient leads. Their account was bringing in enquiries, but each one was costing too much, and the setup wasn't ready to make the most of their busy seasons.

Here's what I changed:

  • Rewrote the ad copy to target their specific service areas.

  • Launched landing pages designed to convert.

  • Increased the budget gradually as demand and performance were proven.

Comparing March 2025 with March 2026:

  • Leads grew 4.5x, from 112 to 504 conversions a month.

  • Cost per lead dropped by more than half, from A$45.85 to A$22.32.

  • Conversion rate more than doubled, from 15.3% to 33.7%.

Seasonality still played a big part in their traffic. The difference was that when demand peaked, the campaigns were set up to capture it instead of wasting budget.

So, is Google Ads worth it for Sunshine Coast tradies?

If it's set up properly and managed consistently, yes. Google Ads puts your business in front of local people at the exact moment they need your service. The key is focusing on quality leads and cost per lead, not clicks or impressions.

If your current ads are bringing in clicks but not jobs, the problem is usually fixable. Often it's the foundations: targeting, landing pages and tracking.
